Business in Pueblo County - Major Industries

The main industry in Pueblo for most of its history was the Colorado Fuel and Iron (CF&I) steel mill on the south side of town. The steel-market crash of 1982 led to the decline of the company. After going through several bankruptcies, the company was acquired by Oregon Steel Mills and changed its name to Rocky Mountain Steel Mills. In 2007, Evraz Group, one of Russia's biggest steel producers, made a deal with Oregon Steel Mills and agreed to buy the company for $2.3 billion dollars. Today, the steel mill employs approximately 900 people in the county.

Alternative Energy

Pueblo County is helping to pave the way for a greener future by partnering with the European alternative energy company, Vestas Wind Systems. After a slight drop in the market in 2005, Vestas recovered and was voted Top Green Company of 2006. In late 2008 the company announced a manufacturing expansion in Pueblo, Colorado, which is now running at full production. One of the leading wind mill turbine producers in the world, the company currently employs about 450 people within Pueblo County.


 Amongst the many industries in Pueblo County, one of its staples is manufacturing. With a skilled workforce, Pueblo County has brought in many major manufacturers. One of the more notable employers in the area is the multinational corporation, Trane Inc. As one of the largest employers in the area, Trane Inc. employs over 1000 people in Pueblo County.


One of the core industries in Pueblo County, health care provides over 4,000 jobs to the citizens of the county. The two largest employers for this industry are Parkview Medical Center, with approximately 2,300 people employed, and St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center, with approximately 1,000 people employed. The skills and education in Pueblo County’s workforce have allowed these two major medical facilities to expand into all-encompassing, state-of-the-art medical institutions that serve the needs of the people of Pueblo County.

Customer Service

 The county’s workforce and culture have made the area an attractive location for the customer service industry. Employers such as AT&T, Convergys, and R.M.S. account for over 1,100 jobs in Pueblo County.
